HackMotion Review: Can Wrist Data Really Fix Your Golf Swing?

HackMotion Review: Can Wrist Data Really Fix Your Golf Swing?

As a golf speed and tech junkie, I’m always looking for new tools to improve my swing — and the HackMotion wrist sensor has been all over YouTube. So this week, I got my hands on one (well, borrowed it!) and put it through its paces to see what all the fuss is about. Could this tech really help you understand — and fix — your wrist angles during the golf swing?

Let’s dive into what HackMotion does, how it works, and what I learned from testing the Core version.

What Is HackMotion and How Does It Work?

HackMotion is a wrist sensor that tracks and measures wrist movements in your swing — primarily flexion (bowing) and extension (cupping). It straps onto your lead wrist and sends real-time data to an app on your phone or tablet.

There are three levels of HackMotion available:

  • Core (£300) – Measures flexion and extension (ideal for everyday golfers).
  • Plus (£500) – Adds putting data and more in-depth analysis.
  • Pro (£1,000) – Offers full wrist metrics including radial/ulnar deviation and rotation, built for coaches and teaching pros.

What’s great is that all three options use the same hardware – the difference lies in the software and level of data access. I had the Core version on test.

First Impressions: Setup and Ease of Use

Out of the box, setup is super simple. The sensor fits over your glove or straight onto your wrist and pairs with the HackMotion app in seconds. It’s comfortable enough that I barely noticed it while hitting shots.

Once paired, the app offers multiple training modes including:

  • Diagnostics
  • Free Practice
  • Skill Drills
  • AI-powered feedback

Even with just the Core version, you still get access to smart drills and swing feedback based on PGA Tour data benchmarks.

Understanding Flexion and Extension

Let’s keep it simple:

  • Flexion (bowed wrist) = the clubface tends to close
  • Extension (cupped wrist) = the clubface tends to open

Getting this balance right is key to clubface control, which massively impacts direction and strike.

I ran a diagnostic session using my pitching wedge to establish a wrist pattern. The sensor gave me live feedback during the swing, showing exactly what my lead wrist was doing at impact — super useful info I’d never get from feel alone.

What Did the Data Show?

At first, the data revealed I was adding too much extension through impact, especially when I wasn’t properly using my lower body. This meant I was “flipping” the clubhead – something that leads to inconsistent contact and control.

Interestingly, when I felt more grounded and used my legs (despite doing a heavy leg session earlier), my wrist angles neutralized naturally. This showed me in real-time how my body and wrist mechanics are linked — a great learning moment.

Drills That Actually Work

What really blew me away was the instant feedback loop. I ran a drill called “Dynamic Release” where the app asked me to stop at P6 (club parallel before impact) and hit from there. After just two reps, I felt the difference — more control, less flipping.

I followed up with full swings, and the data confirmed the correction: I went from +10° extension to -10° flexion through impact. That’s a swing fix, right there.

Exploring More Drills: Top of Backswing & Transition

The app is loaded with drills targeting various parts of the swing:

  • Static & dynamic top of backswing
  • Transition control
  • Release patterns
  • Impact zones

You even get audio and vibration cues to guide your positions — it’s like having a coach built into your glove.

For example, I tried a dynamic top drill to fine-tune my wrist position at the top. The feedback system told me instantly when I was too cupped or too bowed, helping me find my neutral — again, in just a few reps.

Final Thoughts: Is HackMotion Worth It?

I’ll be honest — I’m massively impressed. The HackMotion Core version offers tremendous value and insight, even without the added data of the Plus or Pro versions.

If you’re a:

  • Data-driven golfer wanting to understand your swing
  • Coach looking for better wrist metrics
  • Or someone struggling with consistent contact…

...then HackMotion could be a game-changer.

Personally, I’m already eyeing up the Pro version for the future — especially if I go deeper into coaching and want to track wrist rotation and deviation. But even the Core has kept me up at night thinking about all the possible improvements!

Would I Buy It?

Absolutely. In fact, I might be adding this to my Christmas wish list — and if I wasn’t already testing it, I’d be hunting for a discount code right now!

Over the next few days, I’ll test HackMotion with longer clubs and the driver, and I’ll post more insights over on Golf Mad Dad social channels.
